I’m surprised that decks like this have taken so long to become popular in the Eternal format. When I think back to Magic and other formats like Modern and Extended, the formats were so fast that cards like Jace, the Mind Sculptor and Cryptic Command were unplayable. Control decks were more like Jund decks with a big pile of removal and some life gain and card draw.
